Chapter Seven

Carina took the next few days to herself. She still didn’t have any way to contact Valen barring showing up at their club but her roommates were already freaking out enough by her uncharacteristic change of heart. She didn’t want them to find out any more information than they needed. She wanted to protect Valen’s identity as much as she could, even if it was from the people she trusted most.

Of course, the days she had to herself, she spent researching. Her notebook was almost half-full by the time she finished all of the Google searches she planned to do on the list of suspects she showed Valen. There were some that she was able to cross off and others that consisted of multiple bullet points of corruption that made her cringe. She hated that the people she was supposed to trust with her safety were nothing more than deceitful and crooked.

She was glad, though, that she had Valen. She wouldn’t feel unsafe in the city as long as she knew Valen was around. Ever since Saturday, it was almost as if she could feel Valen’s presence more heavily now that she broke through the first wall of protection they had built around themself. When she wandered down to her favorite café or took Trouble for a walk, she hoped to see Valen around every corner. Her heart jumped when she spotted anyone in black which she realized was ridiculously pathetic but she had never seen Valen in any other color.

Even when she sat in her bedroom at night, staring out the window at the city below her, she hoped to see Valen waiting in the shadows. Carina perked up any time someone walked underneath the streetlights, straining her eyes as if she could wish it was Valen waiting to take her away. She wasn’t sure when she had gotten so romantic—or pathetic—but she didn’t mind the feeling. She liked the fact that she had something to look forward to with each passing shadow.

One day, it would be Valen, and that was enough for Carina to continue her search whenever she could.

When she wasn’t researching or waiting for Valen, she was watching the local news. She listened for clues, for new names to add to her list, and any mention of Night Watch—both the club and the vigilante. It wasn’t often that her friends joined her, but Xavier was sitting beside her as they snacked on cheese. She appreciated the company but it meant she couldn’t take the notes she was hoping to.

“You’ve been keeping up with the news a lot more than usual, Rina. Is everything okay?” Xavier asked.

“I’m just getting ready for this semester. I know they’re going to ask us a relentless number of questions about current events and I want to stay up to date.”

“Current events won’t exactly be current by the beginning of the semester,” Xavier pointed out. Carina rolled her eyes and threw a piece of cheddar in his direction. “I’m just saying!
